About the Book

Personal Branding: A Manifesto on Fame & Influence

A 376-page expansion of the 2021 original: in the author's own words, “a continuation and remarkably more mature look,” and “a far more thorough deep-dive” rather than a light revision. Edited by Eric Chow and Michelle Fongeallaz. Cover art by Alexander Stephens (opens in a new tab).

Eight chapters and 78 subchapters run from Education and The 4 Laws of Personal Branding through Mindset, Branding, Reputation Management, Marketing, and Personal Skills to Sustainability, with an essay on Identity Positioning™ set between chapters seven and eight. Each subchapter closes with Q (Question), T (Task), or A (Apply) prompts, so the book is worked through, not only read.

Both editions reached Amazon's Top 10 in Public Relations. The Second Edition surpassed its predecessor in both rankings and sales.

At its peak, the Manifesto ranked in Amazon's Top 10 Best Sellers in Public Relations, the same chart led by Edward Bernays' Propaganda, the founding text of the discipline.

The Gap It Fills

Why the Manifesto Exists

No philosophy, codified body, or standard of practice existed for personal branding. The Second Edition fills that institutional gap, establishing the core tenets of belief, laws, and standards of practice as the world's first Philosophy of Personal Branding.

It presents philosophical and psychological approaches built to resist obsolescence, rather than platform tactics that expire with the next algorithm. In the author's own words, the Second Edition is “a continuation and remarkably more mature look” at the subject, and “a far more thorough deep-dive” than the 2021 original.

The dedication reads: “Dedicated to YOU, the singular person that this Manifesto talks about.”

The Doctrine Inside

Four Laws and Six Tiers

The 4 Laws of Personal Branding build sequentially: without Familiarity, Connection does not exist; without Fame and Influence, Personal Branding collapses.

  • The Law of Familiarity. Familiarity, built through repeated sensory exposure, naturally produces trust.
  • The Law of Connection. Shared commonality gives other people a genuine reason to care.
  • The Law of Fame and Influence. Fame (quantifiable reach) combined with influence (emotional sway) accelerates whatever is being pursued; either alone is limited.
  • The Law of Personal Branding. A personal brand is innate and unavoidable. It exists from birth, whether or not it is consciously directed.

The Hierarchy of Personal Branding then maps reach in six tiers: Unconscious Incompetent, Friends and Family, The Local Hero, The State Representative, The National Personality, and The International Icon. The free Identity Positioning™ Brand Audit (opens in a new tab) scores where a personal brand stands today across The Five Personal Brand Pillars.

Built to Be Worked Through

A Book You Use, Not Only Read

Every one of the 78 subchapters closes with a prompt marked Q (Question), T (Task), or A (Apply), so a reader finishes each one with something to answer or to do.

Mashman Consulting Group has turned the subchapters into free tools on identitypositioning.com, each citing the subchapter it comes from:

From the Publisher

The Standard for Every Title

The Manifesto is the imprint's flagship, and the proof of the standard Mashman Publishing holds every other title to. The Second Edition was produced as a suite: paperback, hardcover, and ebook at release, with the audiobook in production, all distributed through standard trade and retail channels.

That is the 360 approach the imprint takes with every book: every format planned from the start, and the author's own reach behind each one.
